What is LPG
LPG is a hydrocarbon gas that exists in a liquefied form. LPG is colorless, low carbon and highly efficient fuel. Supplied in two main forms, Propane (C3H8) and Butane (C4H10). LPG has a range of uses from providing fuel for cooking gas in home or commercial or catering powering fuel for industries, autogas vehicle and more.
Forms of LPG – Propane, butane, autogas and biogas are all form of LPG and each have individual uses.
Propane- Propane is used for BBQs, offgrid domestic LPG central hearing, LPG gas cookers, caravans, plus numerous other residential and commercial applications.
Butane- Butane is perfect for fueling indoor portable heaters, plus is often used as refrigeration fuel and as a propellant in both household and industrial environment.
AutoLPG- For fueling three wheelers and four wheelers. It is sold in various autogas station across India and is known as the greener option for automotive fuel.
Biogas- Biogas is also known as bio propane and renewable propane, is chemically identical to LPG. It is compatible with all LPG products, but with a lower carbon footprint, thanks to the sustainably sourced renewable feedstock it is produced from. Biogas has absolutely no compromise on performance and can be produced in several ways, depending on the feedstock and process. Currently the main production method is the renewable biodiesel production process which also generates a by product of biogas. During the refining process, a variety of waste `off-gases` are produced that contain propane or bioLPG. For everyone of biodeisel 50kgs of bioLPG is generated from this off gas stream. This is co-product then purified to make it identical to conventional propane.
Properties of LPG-
-LPG is in gaseous form at ambient temperature (250 C) and in liquid form under pressure.
-It is colorless and non toxic
-It is heavier than air and lighter than water
-It is odorless, however Ethyl Mercaptan is added as an odorant for leakage detection
-It has a low boiling point range of >-40 C and flash point of -140 C
-It has a narrow flammality range of 1.8% to 10% in air
-It can cause severe cold burns to the skin due to rapid vaporisation and lowering of temperature.
-Approximately minimum ignition temperature range is 410 C to 580 C

Safety-
-Ensure work on fixed LPG installation whether new or being modified, is carried out by a licensed or authorized gas installer
-Keep LPG appliances and filling in an excellent condition with timely service and regular checks.
-Use parts and equipments, manufactured and approved for LPG

-Remember to turn off the gas supply and ventiate before attempting to reignite an LPG appliance that fails to ignite to ignite immediately.
-Get the cylinders inspected by an authorized LPG distributor atleast once 5 years.
-Stamp the last inspection date on the cylinder collar, neck
Never-
-Attempt to tamper with the safety valve or other cylinder fittings.
-Apply under force to open or close main cylinder valve
-Hesitate to consult a licensed has installer/mechanic
-Connect LPG appliance to any other gas supply system.
